Uroczystość prowadził profesor Andrzej Lubiński, obecnie kierownik Kliniki Kardiologii Interwencyjnej Zaburzeń Rytmu Serca Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi. – Minęło właśnie 40 lat odkąd pan doktor Marek Janaszkiewicz za tablicą na której się pisze kredą, to dla tych z państwa którzy tego nie widzą, napisał słowo „Strajk”. Wtedy to właśnie studenci Akademii Medycznej postawili kropkę nad mówiąc, że przyłączają się do strajku studentów, zainicjowanego dwa dni wcześniej w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim – przypomniał profesor Andrzej Lubiński.
Wśród uczestników uroczystości był doktor Marek Janaszkiewicz, przed czterdziestu laty student drugiego roku medycyny. – Ta sala była pełna, głowa przy głowie, na schodach na tych ławkach. To jest trudno opisać te emocje. Tu było duszno, wszystko buzowało. Nie mieliśmy innego wyjścia, to się po prostu musiało wydarzyć. Po Sierpniu 80 musiał nastąpić bunt młodzieży. No tak się złożyło, że to ja napisałem słowo „Strajk” na tablicy – mówił dr Marek Janaszkiewicz.

W proteście studentów medycyny wzięło udział ponad półtora tysiąca osób. Strajk był ważnym elementem ciągu wydarzeń prowadzących do obalenia komunizmu i rozpoczęcia demokratycznych przemian w całej Europie Środkowowschodniej.
